Designing a Compliant and Efficient Manufacturing Layout for Medical Textiles
Business challenge
The medical textile manufacturer required a compliant plant layout that could support varied medical textile products while maintaining safe, segregated, and unidirectional movement from raw material receipt to finished-goods dispatch. The layout also needed to minimise cross-contamination risks, improve material flow, provide appropriate clean manufacturing controls, and accommodate personnel, quality, sterilisation, and waste-management requirements.
What we did
Studied the complete production journey and space requirements from raw material receipt, quarantine, preparation, cutting, sewing, and assembly through quality inspection, sterilisation, packaging, storage, and dispatch.
Designed a hybrid process-and-product layout to support both varied medical textile products and higher-volume production lines such as surgical and isolation gowns.
Created segregated, unidirectional movement paths for materials, employees, finished goods, and waste to minimise cross-traffic and contamination risks.
Incorporated cleanroom requirements, controlled access points, airlock changing areas, pass-through provisions, quality-testing spaces, maintenance access, and hygienic surface requirements into the layout.
Supported implementation of the approved layout, including operational zoning, equipment and workstation placement, aisle planning, material movement, utilities, safety access, and future operational flexibility.
